Abel -the first victim

Abel -the first victim, is the companion piece to the painting: Cain –the first murderer. I did these monochrome oil paintings on masonite as a school exercise in the early 1980’s. They represent the Bible story of Adam and Eve’s sons found in the book of Genesis.

Abel was killed by his brother Cain in a murderous rage of jealousy. He is shown at the moment of death, releasing his last breath. Violent death is not pretty, so I did not seek to glamorise it. The live model for the painting was my seventeen year-old cousin Nelson Willis Rivera. Today, “Nelson” is a pastor in Florida.
